About this position

PhD project: Study of CEtaceans in their Natural Environment (SCENE)

This three-year doctoral project will investigate dolphins, other cetaceans and dugongs in the waters of the United Arab Emirates and the Arabian Gulf. The research aims to develop a comprehensive understanding of marine mammal distribution, ecology and populations in Emirati waters.

The doctoral researcher will combine field-based marine biology with molecular and acoustic approaches. Activities include drone surveys at sea, acoustic recordings, deployment and monitoring of hydrophone stations in marine protected areas, environmental DNA sampling and metabarcoding. The project also includes population genetics and collaboration with Abu Dhabi’s environmental authorities.

The PhD will be conducted through the SAFIR Ocean Institute at Sorbonne Université Abu Dhabi, the mirror institute of the Institut de l’Océan, with joint supervision between the United Arab Emirates and France. Supervisors are Professor Olivier Adam of Sorbonne Université and Professor Jean-Luc Jung of the Muséum national d’Histoire naturelle’s ISYEB laboratory. The wider research environment connects with marine research facilities including the Station Biologique de Roscoff, the Observatoire Océanologique de Banyuls-sur-Mer, the Laboratoire d’Océanographie de Villefranche and the Station marine de Concarneau.

The project offers interdisciplinary training across marine mammal ecology, molecular biology, environmental DNA, bioacoustics and population genetics.
