About this position
The University of Oulu is seeking a Postdoctoral Researcher in Conservation Genomics to join the Ecology and Genetics Research Unit in the Faculty of Science. The researcher will contribute to the European Union LIFE SOS project, which supports the long-term survival of the critically endangered Saimaa ringed seal (Pusa saimensis), a species found exclusively in Lake Saimaa, Finland.
The project combines genetic research, population modelling, and practical conservation to help increase the seal population and improve the effectiveness of conservation measures. Led by the University of Oulu in collaboration with the University of Eastern Finland, the research focuses on developing DNA-based monitoring tools and investigating the causes of seal pup mortality using state-of-the-art genomics.
The postdoctoral researcher will establish and conduct SNP-based molecular approaches for monitoring Saimaa ringed seals and perform whole-genome analyses related to pup mortality. The role involves working in an international research team, collaborating with national and international conservation stakeholders, and contributing to a multidisciplinary research environment.
The researcher will also support Master's and PhD students, participate in Master's- and PhD-level teaching, contribute to external funding applications, and help advance methods for conservation genomics. The position offers an opportunity to work at the intersection of ecology, genetics, molecular biology, aquatic mammal conservation, and biodiversity protection.
