PhD in Data-driven Design and Operation of Human-centric Energy-Optimized Indoor Environments at Aalborg University Aalborg University in Denmark

Aalborg University (AAU) invites applications for a fully funded PhD position in Data-driven methods for design and operation of human-centric energy-optimized indoor environments. The position is based at the Department of Architecture, Design & Media Technology (CREATE), with the primary workplace in either Aalborg or Copenhagen, Denmark. The project is part of the interdisciplinary PhD programme in Media, Architecture & Design, and aims to explore how digital and data-driven technologies can be leveraged to design and operate indoor environments that prioritize both human comfort and energy efficiency.

The research will integrate environmental sensing, user feedback systems, computer vision, machine learning, and theories of human perception and behavioural nudging. The overarching goal is to support the development of responsive buildings that balance energy optimization with human-centric design. The department is recognized for its focus on the intersection of architecture, urban design, digital and interactive media, technology, creativity, and end-user engagement. AAU is internationally known for its problem-based learning approach and real-world research impact.

The PhD position is structured with a dual-supervisor setup, with one supervisor based in Aalborg and another in Copenhagen, fostering collaboration across campuses. Supervisors include Associate Professor Christiane Berger and Annemarie Davidsen from AAU. The position is open to candidates with a completed Master’s degree in architecture, design, media technology, data-driven design, or related fields, and who are eligible for enrolment at the Technical Doctoral School of IT and Design at AAU. Applicants should have a strong interest in interdisciplinary research that combines technology, design, and human behaviour.

The position is fully funded for three years, with salary and benefits following the Danish AC collective agreement and university regulations. Employment is full-time and includes regular PhD progress assessments. AAU encourages applications from diverse and international candidates.
