About this position
The Environmental Biotechnology Innovation Centre (EBIC) at Heriot-Watt University, Edinburgh, is offering an exciting PhD project opportunity focused on the use of microbes in the bioremediation of environments contaminated with plastics, petrochemicals, and PFAS. This interdisciplinary research hub is dedicated to developing innovative environmental solutions through engineering biology and synthetic biology methods.
The successful applicant will join EBIC, a collaborative project involving 10 academic institutions and 30 partners across the UK, working on novel approaches for environmental bioremediation, resource recovery, and waste recycling. The project aims to address the challenge of ~300,000 contaminated sites in the UK, with a focus on aquatic and soil pollution remediation using microorganisms, biochar, and advanced engineering biology techniques.
The PhD will be based in the School of Engineering and Physical Sciences at Heriot-Watt University, under the supervision of Professor Tony Gutierrez. The research will contribute to significant technological advancements in reducing environmental pollutants such as nano-/micro-plastics, petrochemicals, and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS).
Eligibility is restricted to UK nationals or those who have resided in the UK for at least three years. Applicants must hold or expect to hold a first class MSc or equivalent degree, or at least a first class Honours degree. Selection is based on academic excellence and research potential, with interviews conducted in person or via Teams. The successful candidate must be available to start the PhD in 2026.
For more information, visit the EBIC website or contact Professor Tony Gutierrez directly. This opportunity is ideal for candidates interested in environmental science, biology, chemical engineering, and chemistry, with a passion for tackling pollution and advancing biotechnological solutions.
