About this position
Ghent University is advertising a PhD / doctoral fellow position in forest ecology, remote sensing, terrestrial laser scanning, and microclimate buffering. The project is hosted by Q-ForestLab in the Department of Environment and focuses on linking high-temporal-resolution 3D forest structure with microclimate time series in tropical and temperate forest ecosystems.
The research will examine how disturbances and forest dynamics shape forest structure over time, and how those structural changes influence buffering capacity against climate extremes. The work uses high-end terrestrial laser scanning (TLS), including permanently installed scanners, together with co-located microclimate measurements such as temperature and relative humidity. Fieldwork may take place in Brazil, Australia, and Belgium.
The successful candidate will collect and analyse daily, monthly, or yearly 3D TLS data, combine them with microclimate observations, and use radiative transfer models to simulate below-canopy light regimes with the ForEdgeClim model. The project is promoted by Prof. Kim Calders and co-supervised by Dr. Louise Terryn, with Prof. Pieter De Frenne as an informal advisor.
Applicants should have an MSc degree or equivalent in a relevant field such as Bioscience-Engineering, Remote Sensing, Surveying, Physics, Geosciences, Environmental Sciences, or Computer Science. Strong programming skills in R, C++, or Python are required, along with a good command of English and willingness to do extended field campaigns in tropical and temperate forests. Experience with radiative transfer modelling or forest laser scanning is welcome but not mandatory.
This is a full-time doctoral fellowship for an initial 12 months, extendable to a maximum of 48 months after positive evaluation. The fellowship is described as 100% of the net salary of an AAP member in equal family circumstances and is tax-free under the stated conditions. The successful candidate will be based in Ghent.
Application deadline: 30 November 2026, midnight CEST. Apply via the Google Form and include your CV and application letter. The motivation letter should mention your favourite animal.
