About this position

Imperial College London is offering a PhD studentship in the Department of Aeronautics focused on real-time data assimilation for multi-physics flows. The project addresses a central challenge in engineering prediction: physics-based models can extrapolate to unobserved conditions but contain uncertain parameters and neglected physical effects, while measurements provide information about the true system state but are sparse and noisy.

The doctoral research will develop bias-aware data assimilation methods that estimate and correct model error as system dynamics evolve. The methods will combine models with measurements while retaining physical consistency, enabling models to learn whenever new observations are assimilated. The work will address rapidly changing operating conditions, including examples such as gusts affecting aircraft wings and sudden load changes in combustors.

Initially, the methods will be prototyped on low-order dynamical systems before being scaled to higher-dimensional multi-physics problems involving interacting fluid, structural, acoustic and chemical processes. The research environment will provide experience in data assimilation, Bayesian inference, physics-constrained machine learning and computational methods for multi-physics systems.

The project is supervised by Dr. Andrea Nóvoa at Imperial College London. The doctoral researcher will use high-performance computing facilities, present findings at international conferences and publish in peer-reviewed journals, while benefiting from Imperial’s doctoral training programme and career support. The skills developed are relevant to academic, industrial and research-laboratory careers.

Funding details

Fully funded for 3.5 years, covering full tuition fees and providing an annual tax-free stipend of £23,805 for Home, EU and International students.

What's required

Applicants are expected to have or be on track to achieve a First class honours MEng/MSci or higher degree, or international equivalent, in a mathematical or engineering discipline such as Aeronautics, Mechanical Engineering, Mathematics, Statistics or Physics. A background in computational physics or mathematics, data assimilation, or dynamical systems for fluid mechanics is advantageous. The project seeks curious and motivated candidates who enjoy working at the interface of physics, mathematics and computation.
