About this position

PhD position in Landscape Governance and Management at the Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences (SLU), Sweden.

The doctoral project focuses on governance and organisational alignment for the operation and maintenance of urban drainage infrastructures, especially stormwater systems such as gully pots and stormwater ponds. The research connects environmental science, civil engineering, urban planning, management, and landscape architecture, with attention to sustainable urban water management, pollutant reduction, and coastal ecosystem protection.

The PhD student will work on both empirical and theoretical research, including stakeholder collaboration with the water and wastewater industry and the green sector. The project uses programmatic alignment theory, long-term strategic management, legal and policy frameworks, economic frameworks, and Nature-based Thinking to study governance feasibility, organisational set-ups, and barriers to effective maintenance.

Eligibility highlights: a Master’s degree or equivalent in a relevant field; strong English skills; ability to work independently and take initiative. For landscape architecture applicants, specific credit requirements apply. Swedish or another Scandinavian language and a valid driver’s licence are desirable.

Funding: full-time doctoral employment for 4 years, with salary according to the local collective agreement and fixed salary progression.

Location: Alnarp, Sweden.

Deadline: 16 November 2026.
