About this position

This PhD position at Eindhoven University of Technology focuses on developing measurement-driven compact models for photonic integrated circuits (PICs), a rapidly evolving field at the intersection of electrical engineering, physics, and photonics. As integration density in photonic circuits increases, new design methods and testing strategies are required to keep pace with technological advancements. The successful candidate will be responsible for creating and validating compact models that balance physical functionality with computational efficiency, enabling advanced simulation of high-density PICs.

The research will target key photonic components such as optical amplifiers, lasers, and photodetectors, with particular attention to noise and high-power behavior. These models are expected to extend PIC applications beyond traditional communications, including fiber sensing, metrology, and microwave photonics. A significant aspect of the project involves developing and implementing novel optical test and characterization techniques, aiming for robust, wafer-scale measurement of model parameters. Initial work will be conducted in the optical characterization lab, with subsequent transfer of techniques to automated wafer testing tools.

The position offers a unique opportunity to set new standards and design concepts in a field that is still largely unexplored, providing ample scope for creativity and innovation. Collaboration is central to the role, involving close interaction with the Photonic Integration Technology Center, foundry, design and test partners in the Pix Europe consortium, and the JePPIX network. Eindhoven’s location within the Brainport ecosystem facilitates further engagement with leading academic and industrial partners. The PhD student will join the Photonic Integration group (PhI) within the Electrical Engineering department, part of the newly established Casimir Institute, which brings together research groups specializing in integrated photonics, semiconductor technology, and quantum technology.

The group comprises around 70 members, including 25 PhD students, and benefits from extensive, state-of-the-art laboratory facilities. The position is fully funded for four years, with a competitive salary and comprehensive benefits, including pension, parental leave, and allowances for commuting and home office expenses. International candidates are supported by a dedicated Staff Immigration Team and a tax compensation scheme.

Applicants should have a Master’s degree in Physics, Electrical Engineering, or a related discipline, with demonstrated affinity for photonic devices and circuits, experience in optics, photonics, or semiconductor devices, and skills in modeling and experimental work. Proficiency in English at C1 level is required. The application process is online, requiring a cover letter, CV, and references. The vacancy remains open until filled, with an initial assessment after nine months of employment.
