About this position
University of Southampton is advertising a funded PhD project in picophotonics, focused on sub-nanometre light–matter interactions, optical metrology, and super-resolution imaging. The project explores how deeply subwavelength light fields, metamaterials, information theory, and artificial intelligence can be combined to achieve atomic-scale optical measurement precision.
The research sits in the Nanophotonics research group and the Optoelectronics Research Centre (ORC) at the University of Southampton. The group works on novel materials and light–matter interaction phenomena at sub-wavelength scales, with applications in optical metrology, sensing, super-resolution imaging, data processing, and advanced manufacturing.
Students will gain experience in experimental photonics, computational electromagnetic modelling, nanofabrication, machine learning, AI, and electron and optical microscopy. The project also offers training in photonics, report writing, project management, time management, presentation skills, and safety training.
Eligibility: applicants should have a UK 2:1 honours degree or international equivalent in physics, optics and photonics, nanomaterials science, or a closely related discipline. English language qualification is required if applicable.
Funding: the project is funded by EPSRC through the 'Future Advanced Metrology Hub'. Funding opportunities are available for UK and international students, and Horizon Europe fee waivers may cover the difference between overseas and UK fees for qualifying students.
Application: apply via the University of Southampton postgraduate research portal. Select Research, 2027/28, Faculty of Engineering and Physical Sciences, then PhD ORC (7097), and include the supervisor name in the application. Applications are reviewed on a rolling basis, so early submission is encouraged.
Supervisors: Prof Kevin MacDonald, Prof Nikolay Zheludev, Associate Prof Giorgio Adamo, and Dr Eric Plum.
