About this position
PhD opportunity at the University of Southampton in time crystals, timetronics, nanophotonics, and next-generation data processing.
The project explores the physics of time crystals and the idea of a timetron: a nanomechanical element switched by light between rest and sustained oscillation to encode logical states for data processing. Research themes include experimental photonics, computational electromagnetic modelling, nanofabrication, machine learning and AI, and electron/optical microscopy.
The project is hosted in the Nanophotonics research group and the Optoelectronics Research Centre (ORC) at the University of Southampton. The ORC offers a large interdisciplinary photonics environment with extensive laboratory facilities and training. The group works on novel materials and light-matter interactions with applications in optical metrology, sensing, super-resolution imaging, data processing, and advanced manufacturing.
Supervisors: Prof Nikolay Zheludev, Prof Kevin MacDonald, Dr Eric Plum, and Associate Prof Giorgio Adamo.
Funding: competition-funded PhD project supported by EPSRC research project “3D Nanoscale Metamaterials to deliver a sustainable future (MetaHub)”. Funding is available for UK and international students, and Horizon Europe fee waivers may cover the difference between overseas and UK fees for qualifying students.
Eligibility: applicants should hold a UK 2:1 honours degree or equivalent in physics, optics, photonics, nanomaterials science, or a closely related field.
Application: apply via the University of Southampton postgraduate research portal, selecting Research, 2027/28, Faculty of Engineering and Physical Sciences, and programme PhD ORC (7097). Include your CV, two academic references, transcripts/certificates, and English language qualification if applicable. Applications are reviewed on a rolling basis, so early submission is recommended.
