PhD opportunity in wheat , soil microbiology , plant-microbe interactions , metabolomics , bioinformatics , and environmental microbiology at the John Innes Centre and the neighbouring Earlham Institute in Norwich, United Kingdom . This project investigates the plant “ cry-for-help ” effect in wheat: how roots respond to pathogen attack by changing metabolite secretion and recruiting beneficial soil microbes. The student will work with wheat split-root microcosms and microbial communities of var...

PhD opportunity at the University of Edinburgh in pancreatic β-cell RNA biology, insulin biosynthesis, and post-transcriptional regulation. This EASTBIO BBSRC Doctoral Training Partnership project investigates how pancreatic β-cell RNA binding proteins (RBPs) regulate insulin mRNA localisation, translation, stability, and decay under euglycaemic and hyperglycaemic conditions. The work aims to uncover the molecular links between glucose metabolism, RBP regulation, and β-cell dysfunction in type 2...

PhD opportunity at the John Innes Centre within the Norwich Research Park Biosciences Doctoral Training Partnership. This project, “From Defence to Antibiotic production: Uncovering New Roles for NLR Signalling in Multicellular Bacteria” , explores how nucleotide-binding and oligomerisation domain-like receptors (NLRs) function in Streptomyces beyond phage defence. The research aims to uncover broader roles in multicellular development , complex signalling networks , and the regulation of natura...

About this position

A fully funded PhD position is available to investigate the gut–heart axis in chimpanzees, focusing on how the microbiome contributes to cardiovascular resilience. The project is hosted at Cardiff University, with co-supervision from Swansea University and industry collaboration with Cultech Ltd. The research will involve developing an in vitro fermentation model of the chimpanzee gut, characterising the microbiome using metabarcoding and metabolomics, and exploring microbiome-based interventions.

The interdisciplinary supervisory team brings expertise in microbiology, cardiovascular science, conservation, and bioinformatics. The project is part of the SWBio Doctoral Training Partnership (DTP) and is a CASE studentship, which includes a placement with the industry partner. Applicants should have a strong background in biological or biomedical sciences and a keen interest in microbiome research and animal health.

The studentship covers tuition fees and a stipend, with applications open until December 3, 2025. For more information and to apply, visit the SWBio DTP website.
