About this position
PhD opportunity at the University of East Anglia (School of Chemistry) in Norwich, United Kingdom, focused on fungal growth and infection, G-quadruplexes (G4s), fungal genetics, genomics, bioinformatics, molecular biology, and antifungal resistance.
The project, supervised by Dr Stefan Bidula, investigates how unusual DNA/RNA structures may act as molecular switches controlling metabolic changes during fungal spore germination in Aspergillus fumigatus. The work combines multidisciplinary training in molecular microbiology, fungal genetics, CRISPR-Cas9 genome editing, metabolomics, microscopy, structural biology, and NMR spectroscopy.
This is a fully funded PhD studentship through the Norwich Research Park Biosciences Doctoral Training Programme (NRPDTP) for October 2027 entry. Funding includes tuition fees, a living stipend (£21,805 for 2026/27), and a Research Training Support Grant of £5,000 per year. NRPDTP students also complete a three-month professional internship placement (PIPS) during the doctorate.
Eligibility: applicants should have or expect to obtain at least a UK 2:1 honours degree (or equivalent) in microbiology, molecular biology, biochemistry, biomedical sciences, or a related field. The programme states an English language requirement of IELTS 6.5 overall with 6.0 in each component.
Application notes: the project has been shortlisted for funding by NRPDTP. Interested candidates should review the programme website for full eligibility and application guidance, and use the bespoke Personal and Research statement templates required by the programme. Shortlisted applicants will be interviewed on 2–4 February 2027.
