About this position

PhD opportunity at Eindhoven University of Technology (TU/e) in the Photoacoustics & Ultrasound Laboratory Eindhoven (PULS/e) within the NWO VICI programme (R)evolution in Abdominal Ultrasound Imaging.

The project aims to develop a revolutionary multi-aperture ultrasound platform for comprehensive 3D imaging and biomechanical assessment of abdominal aortic aneurysms (AAA). The research combines ultrasound system design, advanced acquisition strategies, multi-static beamforming, semi-tomographic reconstruction, segmentation, motion tracking, elastography, and biomechanical analysis to improve rupture-risk assessment beyond diameter-based monitoring.

You will work in a highly interdisciplinary environment with other PhD candidates, a postdoctoral researcher, vascular surgeons, ultrasound engineers, and industrial partners such as Philips and Catharina Hospital Eindhoven. The work will be validated through simulations, phantom experiments, and first-in-human volunteer studies, offering strong clinical translation and exposure to state-of-the-art research at the interface of hardware development, signal processing, and AI-driven image analysis.

Eligible applicants should have a Master’s degree or equivalent in Biomedical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Medical Imaging, Applied Physics, Computer Science, or a related field, plus strong skills in ultrasound imaging, programming (MATLAB/Python/C++), and quantitative imaging. Excellent English is required. The role is a full-time PhD employment for four years with an intermediate assessment after nine months. Salary is according to Dutch university scale P, with additional year-end bonus and holiday pay.

Applications must be submitted online and should include a cover letter, CV with publications, and contact details of three references. The vacancy remains open until the position is filled.

What's required

Applicants should hold a Master's degree or equivalent in Biomedical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Medical Imaging, Applied Physics, Computer Science, or a related field. Strong affinity with ultrasound imaging, signal processing, medical image analysis, or computational imaging is required, along with experience in scientific programming such as MATLAB, Python and/or C++. Candidates should have excellent analytical and problem-solving skills, interest in image reconstruction, beamforming, machine learning, and quantitative imaging, and a research-oriented mindset. Ability to work independently and in an interdisciplinary team, interest in collaboration with clinicians and industry partners, motivation to develop teaching and supervision skills, and excellent spoken and written English at C1 level are required. Experience with ultrasound imaging is considered crucial, and experience with image segmentation, deep learning, computer vision, 3D image processing, inverse problems, experimental research, and data acquisition systems is a plus.

How to apply
