About this position
PhD opportunity at Eindhoven University of Technology (TU/e) in the Photoacoustics & Ultrasound Laboratory Eindhoven (PULS/e) within the NWO VICI programme (R)evolution in Abdominal Ultrasound Imaging.
The project aims to develop a revolutionary multi-aperture ultrasound platform for comprehensive 3D imaging and biomechanical assessment of abdominal aortic aneurysms (AAA). The research combines ultrasound system design, advanced acquisition strategies, multi-static beamforming, semi-tomographic reconstruction, segmentation, motion tracking, elastography, and biomechanical analysis to improve rupture-risk assessment beyond diameter-based monitoring.
You will work in a highly interdisciplinary environment with other PhD candidates, a postdoctoral researcher, vascular surgeons, ultrasound engineers, and industrial partners such as Philips and Catharina Hospital Eindhoven. The work will be validated through simulations, phantom experiments, and first-in-human volunteer studies, offering strong clinical translation and exposure to state-of-the-art research at the interface of hardware development, signal processing, and AI-driven image analysis.
Eligible applicants should have a Master’s degree or equivalent in Biomedical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Medical Imaging, Applied Physics, Computer Science, or a related field, plus strong skills in ultrasound imaging, programming (MATLAB/Python/C++), and quantitative imaging. Excellent English is required. The role is a full-time PhD employment for four years with an intermediate assessment after nine months. Salary is according to Dutch university scale P, with additional year-end bonus and holiday pay.
Applications must be submitted online and should include a cover letter, CV with publications, and contact details of three references. The vacancy remains open until the position is filled.
