This PhD project at Eindhoven University of Technology (TU/e) explores dynamic space–time interfaces for high-speed THz beam control . The work sits at the intersection of photonics, electromagnetics, structured waves, nanofabrication, and experimental terahertz systems, with a strong focus on the emerging sub-THz regime (approximately 0.3–1 THz). You will investigate what becomes possible when a THz interface changes while the wave is interacting with it. The project aims to develop dynamically...

PhD opening at Eindhoven University of Technology (TU/e) in ultracold electron source development for time-resolved protein crystallography . This project, Cool T-ReX , is an ERC-funded effort to develop a pulsed electron source with extreme transverse bunch brightness based on photo-ionization of laser-cooled atoms. The long-term goal is to create the first laboratory-scale instrument for time-resolved protein crystallography with electrons, enabling molecular movies of protein conformational c...

About this position

This PhD project is part of VALOR, an interdisciplinary effort to create lightweight composite panels for defense platforms that can both shield sensitive electronics from electromagnetic threats and withstand impact events. The research combines 3D-printed architected nanocomposite materials with predictive modelling to develop panels that carry loads while absorbing electromagnetic waves, with performance tailored to specific applications.

The project offers two PhD positions that work as a team from material screening through to larger-scale demonstrator panels. One track concentrates on mechanics and manufacturing, including 3D printing nanocomposite lattice materials, producing composite facesheets, mechanical testing, and validating mechanical finite element models. The other focuses on electromagnetic testing and design, including formulating polymer nanocomposites, characterizing electromagnetic behaviour, designing absorbing architected structures, and simulating electromagnetic shielding.

You will join the Processing and Performance of Materials section in the Department of Mechanical Engineering at Eindhoven University of Technology. The group works on the links between processing, structure, and properties in polymers and polymer-based composites, and is known for combining experiments and numerical modelling to tailor material performance. The position gives access to laboratories for rheology, polymer processing, additive manufacturing, and mechanical testing, as well as strong computational facilities.

The project is carried out in collaboration with industrial partners within a broader consortium, and the successful candidate will work in an international, multidisciplinary research environment at TU/e in Brainport Eindhoven.

Funding details

What's required

PhD 1 requires a master’s degree (or equivalent) with excellent grades in Mechanical Engineering, specializing in mechanics of materials or solid mechanics; PhD 2 requires a master’s degree (or equivalent) with excellent grades in Engineering (Mechanical or Electrical), Materials Science or Applied Physics, specializing in materials. For both positions, applicants should have a strong interest in combining experimental work with numerical modelling, enthusiasm for interdisciplinary work with industrial and defense partners, a research-oriented and critical mindset, and good communication skills with fluency in English at C1 level. Experience with mechanical characterization, finite element simulations, 3D printing of polymers, polymer/composite processing, electromagnetic characterization, or electromagnetic simulations is a plus depending on the track.
