About this position

PhD opportunity in N2O monitoring and analysis of full-scale wastewater treatment plants through a collaboration between VITO, the BioCo Research Group at Ghent University, and Aquafin.

The project is centered on environmental science, chemical engineering, biological wastewater treatment, and process modelling. The research aims to improve understanding, monitoring, and mitigation of nitrous oxide (N2O) emissions from full-scale wastewater treatment plants, supporting the transition toward climate-neutral water treatment and compliance with the revised European Urban Wastewater Treatment Directive.

The PhD researcher will conduct monitoring campaigns at wastewater treatment plants across Flanders, evaluate and refine continuous N2O measurement techniques, process and analyze high-frequency operational and emission datasets, identify key process variables driving emissions, and develop mechanistic, data-driven, and hybrid modelling approaches. The work also includes scientific publications, conference presentations, stakeholder meetings, and technical reporting.

The position is jointly hosted by VITO in Ostend under the supervision of Dr. Laurence Strubbe and Ghent University under the supervision of Prof. Eveline Volcke. The candidate will spend about half the time at each institution and will also work on-site at wastewater treatment plants across Flanders.

Eligibility highlights: an MSc degree in a relevant discipline such as Environmental Engineering, Chemical Engineering, or (Bio)Process Engineering; affinity with biological wastewater treatment or environmental technology; and interest in sensor technologies, monitoring campaigns, advanced data analysis, mathematical modelling, and/or process optimization. Strong communication skills, independence, teamwork, and a critical mindset are expected.

Funding is secured for an initial 11-month evaluation period starting 1 September 2026. During this period, the candidate will be supported to seek prolongation funding for the remainder of the PhD trajectory.
