About this position
This doctoral project at the Department of Earth Sciences, University of Gothenburg, focuses on remote sensing of landscape change in the Arctic. The work combines drone observations collected across the Arctic, a decade of multispectral Sentinel-2 satellite imagery, and recent advances in machine learning and AI to study changes in Arctic land cover.
The project is embedded in the department’s doctoral school and in local and international networks of Arctic researchers. The research aims to generate new insights into how different Arctic land-cover changes interact and affect ecosystem functioning, supporting better representation of the Arctic in regional and global Earth system models.
As a doctoral student, you will work with multi-source remote sensing data, develop advanced analytical approaches, collaborate with project partners and research group members, and contribute to scientific publications and conference presentations. The position is based within a research environment that emphasizes ecosystem science, climatology, applied geoscience, and strong Arctic research activities.
The project is supervised by Jakob Assmann at the Department of Earth Sciences.
Funding details
Four-year full-time doctoral employment; if the project includes drone data collection in the Arctic, the additional funding required must be secured through external scholarships and other funding opportunities.
What's required
Applicants must have a degree at advanced level, such as a master's degree, in a relevant natural science subject, or have completed at least 60 ECTS at advanced level in relevant natural science subjects, or have an equivalent qualification from Sweden or another country. Relevant subjects include physical geography, geoscience, environmental science, physics and related areas. Candidates who are close to completing their master's degree may apply provided the degree is finished before employment starts. The successful applicant must have a strong interest in using advanced remote sensing and data science to study Arctic change, solid foundational knowledge in either remote sensing or data science, very good programming skills in Python or R, and very good spoken and written English. Merit is given for experience with machine learning including deep learning and AI, work with foundation models or embeddings in remote sensing or time series analysis, work with satellite and drone data, handling large spatial datasets, GIS skills such as QGIS or ArcGIS, and fieldwork experience.
