Candidates will prepare a doctoral thesis in neuroscience, engaging in research topics such as olfaction, vision and acting, robotics, learning and memory, cortical and synaptic plasticity, neuron-glia interaction, signal transduction, cerebral asymmetries, clinical neuropsychology, neurodegenerative diseases, computational neuroscience, and developmental neuroscience. For details on current research projects, visit the programme website.

The curriculum includes a semester-wide neuroscience lecture series "From Molecules to Cognition", oral and written thesis proposals, progress reports, a final report, workshops, symposia, grant writing courses, and technical training. Thesis projects are supervised by two professors, and students benefit from methods courses and cooperation with the Ruhr-Universität Research School (link). International elements include guest lecturers and collaborative projects with partners in Germany and abroad.

Details can be found at scholarship info and graduation grant.

Applicants must hold a Master of Science or German Diplom, preferably in biology, chemistry/biochemistry, psychology, medicine, physics, engineering, or informatics, and demonstrate neuroscientific knowledge and interest in interdisciplinary research. Selection is by entrance exam and interview, including an oral presentation of the Master's thesis research. For the BSc-PhD programme, applicants must hold a Bachelor's or equivalent degree in biology, chemistry, electrical engineering, mathematics, medicine, psychology, or related fields and have completed an experimental thesis. Fluent English (oral and written) is required.
