About this position

PhD opportunity at the University of York in photochemical arylative carbonylation and formylation using manganese catalysis and tandem manganese/palladium catalysis.

The project sits in the Department of Chemistry and is part of the EPSRC Centre for Doctoral Training in Chemical Synthesis for a Healthy Planet (CSHP CDT), with training links across Oxford and York. The research will investigate earth-abundant metal catalysts for arylative carbonylation reactions using aromatic and heteroaromatic halides/pseudohalides and organoboron coupling partners, together with safe carbon monoxide-releasing surrogates and activators. It also includes dual EAM/Pd catalysis for more complex substrates, reaction optimisation in flow and batch systems, in situ IR and LC-MS characterisation, Bayesian optimisation, and green chemistry evaluation using the Chem21 toolkit.

Relevant study areas include chemistry, synthetic chemistry, pharmaceutical chemistry, chemical engineering, and green/sustainable chemistry. The project is primarily based at the University of York, with CDT training across Oxford and York.

This is a fully funded four-year PhD. Funding covers home fees, a tax-free annual living allowance, and a research training support grant. Exceptional international students may also be considered within the CDT funding rules.

Applicants should normally hold or expect a minimum 2:1 Honours degree or equivalent in a relevant subject, and should demonstrate enthusiasm for research, independence, analytical ability, and strong communication skills. English language requirements apply.

The first deadline is 13 November 2026 at 12 noon. Applications may continue after that date, but some projects may be filled in the first round, so early submission is encouraged.

To apply, submit the online PhD in Chemistry application and include a personal statement, ranked project choices, transcripts, references, and the EDI data form where applicable.
