About this position
PhD opportunity at the University of York in Organic Chemistry and Synthetic Chemistry: Sustainable Synthesis of Nitrogen Heterocycles from Bio-based Feedstocks.
This collaborative project focuses on using bio-based feedstocks to build unsaturated and saturated nitrogen heterocyclic scaffolds, then decorating them into agrochemical lead-like compounds. Research themes include synthesis of heteroaromatics such as pyridines, pyrazines, pyrimidines, and quinolines, as well as terpene-derived sp3-rich azepane derivatives for further chemistry. The project connects green and sustainable chemistry with modern organolithiation-based heterocycle elaboration.
The PhD is part of the EPSRC Centre for Doctoral Training in Chemical Synthesis for a Healthy Planet (CSHP CDT), delivered jointly by the Universities of Oxford and York. It is a fully funded four-year programme with taught courses, a 4-month training period at both universities, and a substantive research project. This specific project will primarily be based at the University of York, Department of Chemistry / Green Chemistry Centre of Excellence.
Funding includes 100% home fees, a tax-free annual living allowance of £21,805 (2026/27 UKRI rate), and a £20,000 research training support grant. International applicants are welcome, though only a limited number of EPSRC studentships may be awarded to exceptional international candidates. Visa costs and NHS surcharge are not covered.
Eligibility: applicants should have or expect a minimum 2:1 Honours degree or equivalent in chemistry, chemical engineering, or a closely relevant subject. Strong research motivation, independence, analytical ability, and communication skills are required. English language requirements apply.
Application deadline: 13 November 2026, 12 noon. Apply online and submit a 1000-word personal statement, ranked project choices, transcripts, two referees, and the EDI data form if relevant. Early application is encouraged because projects may be filled after the first round.
