About this position
Doctoral Student in Photonic Fluids and Frequency Combs at ETH Zürich
This PhD project explores new regimes of frequency comb physics and liquid light in fast-gain semiconductor lasers. The research combines semiconductor device fabrication, precision optical experiments, and theoretical/numerical modelling to understand and control nonlinear photonic dynamics.
The doctoral student will work across the full experimental cycle: designing and fabricating semiconductor photonic devices in cleanroom processes, characterizing them electrically and optically, building and operating advanced laser and optical measurement setups, and developing models for temporal dynamics, fluctuations, coherence, and open-system physics.
This opportunity is based at ETH Zürich, with state-of-the-art cleanroom, laser, and characterization facilities. It is a strong fit for candidates with a background in physics, electrical engineering, photonics, or a closely related field, especially those interested in combining fabrication, experiments, and theory/simulations.
Application requirements include a cover letter, CV, academic transcripts of all degrees in English, three professional reference contacts, and a publication or thesis sample. The application deadline is November 17, 2026. Applications must be submitted through the online portal only.
