About this position
ETH Zurich is inviting applications for a Doctoral Student in Photonic Fluids and Frequency Combs in Zurich, Switzerland. The project is based in the Institute for Quantum Electronics and explores new regimes of frequency-comb physics, liquid-like light, fast-gain semiconductor lasers, and nonlinear photonic dynamics.
The PhD student will investigate the dynamics, fluctuations, and open-system physics of liquid light. The work spans semiconductor photonic-device design and cleanroom fabrication, electrical and optical characterization, advanced laser and optical measurement setups, precision measurements of temporal dynamics and coherence, and theoretical and numerical modelling of nonlinear laser systems.
The position offers access to state-of-the-art cleanroom, laser, and characterization facilities at ETH Zurich, together with the opportunity to develop broad expertise across semiconductor technology, device physics, precision optical experiments, and photonic theory. A strong background in physics, electrical engineering, photonics, or a closely related field is expected. Experience with cleanroom fabrication, optical experiments, lasers, or numerical modelling is beneficial but not mandatory.
Applicants should submit one merged PDF containing a research-focused cover letter, CV, English transcripts for all degrees, three professional references with email and direct phone details, and a publication or thesis writing sample. The application deadline is 17 November 2026. Applications must be submitted through the online portal; email and postal applications will not be considered.

What's required
Applicants should have a strong background in physics, electrical engineering, photonics, or a closely related field, and an interest in combining device fabrication, experimental work, and theory or simulations. Previous experience with cleanroom fabrication, optical experiments, lasers, or numerical modelling is advantageous but not required. The application must include a cover letter, CV, academic transcripts for all degrees in English, three professional reference contacts with email addresses and direct phone numbers, and a publication or thesis sample demonstrating academic reasoning and writing.
How to apply
Submit a single merged PDF through the ETH Zurich online application portal. Include the cover letter, CV, English transcripts, three professional references with contact details, and a publication or thesis sample. Applications by email or post are not accepted; questions may be directed to Alexander Dikopoltsev, but applications should not be emailed.
