About this position
Aalborg University is offering a PhD position in safe, resilient learning-based planning and control for heterogeneous multi-robot systems operating under connectivity constraints. The project is based in the Automation and Control Section of the Department of Electronic Systems in Aalborg and is connected to the EU Horizon ROX6G project.
ROX6G develops autonomous robotic systems for exploring hazardous, poorly documented underground mines. The robot teams will combine exploration, mapping, sensing, and sampling while using mobile, multi-hop 5G/6G connectivity. Since the robots also serve as communication nodes, they must adapt their movements and team roles to preserve communication without relying on fixed infrastructure.
The PhD research will address on-the-fly autonomy for multi-robot control systems in uncertain and constrained environments. The work combines theoretical research, algorithm development, and substantial hands-on engineering. The candidate will design and analyse methods for safe and resilient multi-robot planning, control, coordination, and reconfiguration, then implement and evaluate them in realistic simulation environments and on physical robotic platforms.
A further component of the project is the development of digital twins that integrate robotic sensor data to support real-time visualisation, monitoring, and autonomous decision-making. The research will involve simulation, laboratory experiments, and project-level system integration and validation, with particular attention to safety, connectivity, and practical mission performance.
The PhD fellow will collaborate with international partners working across robotics, communications, sensing, and geological modelling. The research environment includes Aalborg University's Advanced Robotics & AI group, which develops self-learning autonomous robotic systems for reliable operation in extreme environments, as well as the department's broader expertise in robotics, artificial intelligence, control systems, communications, and cybersecurity.

What's required
Applicants must hold a Master's degree, preferably in Robotics, Electrical Engineering, Control Engineering, Computer Science, or a closely related field, with a strong foundation in robotics, autonomous systems, planning, and/or control theory. Strong Python and/or C++ programming skills, familiarity with ROS or ROS 2, and experience implementing, integrating, testing, and troubleshooting robotic systems are particularly valued. Advantageous experience includes multi-robot systems, graph-based coordination, safety-critical or robust control, optimisation-based control, autonomous navigation, localisation, SLAM, sensor fusion, simulation, digital twins, data processing, visualisation, real-time robotic experiments, and research publications. Applicants should be motivated to work hands-on with physical robots, sensors, simulations, and experimental setups; able to work independently and collaboratively in an international environment; technically structured and self-driven; and able to communicate clearly in written and spoken English.
