About this position
The University of Southern Denmark invites applications for a postdoctoral position in AI-improved robotic welding control for large steel structures. The appointment is based at the SDU Center for Large Structure Production (LSP), part of the Maersk Mc-Kinney Moller Institute, with the main work location at Odense Havn in Odense.
The project addresses the reduction of production costs and the scalability of floating wind turbine platforms for offshore waters deeper than 60 metres. These platforms contain large, geometrically complex steel structures assembled from prefabricated components. Their dimensional uncertainty, manufacturing tolerances, structural deformation, robot mobility requirements, and limited absolute positioning accuracy make conventional robotic automation challenging.
The postdoctoral researcher will investigate automated welding of large steel elements and develop and validate AI-enabled methods for robotic welding. The work will include compensation of geometric deviations, AI-based perception, single-shot and real-time trajectory adaptation, integration with large-scale robotic systems, and experimental validation under realistic industrial conditions. Specific research activities include designing hybrid control architectures that combine reliable classical control with modern AI, assessing open datasets for training and fine-tuning AI models, identifying sensors and hardware/software components, and validating an automated welding system on floating wind platforms.
LSP provides a physical research and development environment for construction, maritime, and energy companies to test novel production technologies. The researcher will work with approximately 20 researchers, engineers, and PhD students specializing in robot modelling, simulation, control, and application-oriented industrial systems. The group is connected to the Odense Robotics Cluster and collaborates with academic and industrial partners across Denmark and Europe, offering access to large-scale robotic equipment and hands-on research in robots, tools, sensors, and production operations.
The position combines robotics, automation, artificial intelligence, digital twins, 3D modelling, industrial control, and offshore renewable-energy applications in an international, team-oriented research environment.
