About this position
PhD opportunity at the University of Cambridge in the Department of Clinical Neurosciences on unravelling the metabolic basis of aberrant neuroimmune interactions in MS-associated cognitive decline.
This project sits at the intersection of neuroscience, medical science, neuroimmunology, and metabolism. It focuses on multiple sclerosis (MS), especially the mechanisms underlying cognitive impairment, microglial activation, neuronal vulnerability, and neuroimmune crosstalk in the CNS.
Research themes and methods: transcriptomic studies of MS mouse models and human tissue; mechanistic work in primary mouse cell co-cultures; human iPSC-derived neurons and microglia; behavioural and cognitive testing; electrophysiological recordings; and investigation of metabolic pathways that may drive pathological immune responses and neuronal frailty.
Funding: competition-funded PhD project for students worldwide. Cambridge Trust and Gates Cambridge funding deadlines apply. For the October 2027/28 academic year, Gates US round 1 closes on 2026-10-14 and Cambridge Trust/Gates Cambridge round 2 closes on 2026-12-08. Funding is not available for Lent or Easter 2027 places, so alternative funding would be needed for those start dates.
Eligibility highlights: applicants should be strongly interested in neuroscience, MS, neuroimmunometabolism, and cognitive decline. Experience or interest in transcriptomics, cell culture, iPSC models, and electrophysiology would be relevant.
How to apply: register your interest via the FindAPhD listing and apply through the University of Cambridge process. Be sure to indicate every funding scheme you are eligible for before the relevant deadline.
