About this position
This PhD position at Eindhoven University of Technology focuses on the critical role of standardization and intellectual property (IP) in the adoption of Additive Manufacturing (3D printing) for repair and remanufacturing. The project is situated within the Department of Industrial Engineering & Innovation Sciences, specifically the Technology, Innovation and Society (TIS) group, and is part of the NWO-funded ADD-ReAM project, which brings together 15 PhD researchers working on various aspects of additive manufacturing. The successful candidate will investigate how technical standards and IP (including patents, copyright, and design rights) influence the widespread implementation of additive manufacturing in industry, with a particular emphasis on repair and remanufacturing processes. The research will employ mixed methods, combining quantitative and qualitative approaches, and will involve collaboration with the Dutch standards institute NEN and the Dutch patent office (Octrooicentrum NL). Key topics include the development of high-performance, safe products that meet legal requirements, the impact of IP on the right to repair under EU policy, and the tension between IP holders and third-party repairers. The project aims to make both theoretical and practical contributions to the field, ultimately supporting a more circular and sustainable economy. The position offers full-time employment for four years, with a competitive salary and benefits package, including pension, parental leave, and allowances for commuting and home working. The university provides a dynamic, interdisciplinary, and international research environment, with opportunities for professional development and teaching experience. Applicants should have a master’s degree in a relevant field (innovation studies, sustainability, political science, or policy/law), a research-oriented mindset, strong teamwork and communication skills, motivation to teach and coach students, and fluency in English. Applications must be submitted online and include a cover letter, CV, and references. The deadline for applications is November 9, 2025.
