About this position
This doctoral project, Joint Denoising and Material Decomposition in Photon Counting Computed Tomography, sits at the interface of mathematics, image reconstruction, and clinical radiology. The PhD is part of the IGNIDTE programme and is hosted by the University of Innsbruck in collaboration with the Medical University of Innsbruck.
The project focuses on spectrally resolved CT using photon-counting detectors, an imaging technology with wide clinical relevance. The research aims to combine material decomposition and noise reduction by bringing together mathematical modelling and machine learning. A particular emphasis is placed on developing efficient, problem-adapted learning strategies for diffusion models on spectral CT data.
Application areas mentioned in the advert include multispectral CT and automated stroke prediction from photon-counting CT. The project is described as strongly interdisciplinary, linking mathematical methods with medical imaging and offering structured training across both participating universities.
The supervision team includes Lukas Neumann at the University of Innsbruck and Stephanie Mangesius at the Medical University of Innsbruck. The position is embedded in an environment that combines mathematics with clinical radiology and includes international secondments and training activities within the doctoral programme.
The project is offered as a full-time doctoral employment contract in a European-funded research programme.

What's required
A Master’s degree or equivalent is required, with the final certificate available before employment starts, and applicants must not already hold a doctoral degree. The call states an MSCA mobility rule: applicants must not have lived, worked, or studied in Austria for more than 12 months in the 36 months before 10 December 2026. The preferred background is a strong mathematical foundation with coding skills in Python. Suitable profiles include a Master’s in mathematics with Python experience, or a degree in physics or engineering with documented mathematical interest and coding experience, or a computer science degree with a strong mathematical focus. Interest in inverse problems, mathematical modelling, machine learning and optimization, and algorithm development is expected; purely application-oriented profiles without solid, documented mathematical training are not an ideal fit.
How to apply
