About this position

This PhD position at the European Synchrotron Radiation Facility (ESRF) in Grenoble, France, offers an exciting opportunity to join the Nuclear Resonance Scattering (ID14) beamline team and investigate the elastic properties of Ferropericlase-Magnesiowüstite ((Mg₁₋ₓFeₓ)O) under extreme conditions. The research aims to link the elasticity of this mineral system to seismic anomalies observed in Earth's lower mantle, contributing to a deeper understanding of geophysical processes. The successful candidate will conduct experiments to determine phase stability, electronic, magnetic, and elastic properties at high-pressure and high-temperature conditions, utilizing advanced synchrotron techniques such as nuclear resonance scattering and x-ray diffraction.

Experiments will be performed at ID14 and other specialized beamlines. The position is ideal for a highly motivated student with a strong interest in experimental work and the ability to collaborate within a multidisciplinary team. Applicants should hold a degree qualifying for PhD enrolment (MSc, Master 2 de Recherche, Laurea, or equivalent) in chemistry, physics, materials science, or a closely related field.

While experience in high-pressure physics, nuclear resonance scattering, or synchrotron techniques is desirable, it is not mandatory. Proficiency in English is required, as it is the working language at ESRF. Enrollment at the University of Bayreuth (Germany) is a condition of hiring. The contract is for two years, renewable for one additional year, and includes a competitive compensation and allowances package, with financial support for relocation to Grenoble.
