About this position

The Laboratory for High Power Electronic Systems (HPE) at the Department of Information Technology and Electrical Engineering, ETH Zürich, is offering a PhD position focused on developing advanced multi-physics models of planar inductors and transformers. ETH Zürich is renowned for its excellence in science and technology, providing a vibrant international environment and outstanding research facilities.

This research project targets the modelling and optimisation of planar magnetic devices, which are crucial for compact, efficient power electronic converter systems used in energy distribution, renewable energy integration, traction/electric vehicles, and medical applications. The project involves developing digital twins and virtual prototypes at both component and system levels, with a special emphasis on PCB-based winding structures for DC-DC converters, automotive battery interconnections, and wireless charging systems.

The successful candidate will create comprehensive models describing high-frequency losses, parasitic capacitances, and temperature distributions in windings and cores. The role also includes designing electrical insulation models, optimising core and winding geometry, and developing advanced cooling concepts. These models will be integrated into optimisation procedures for power electronic converter systems, aiming to push the limits of efficiency and power density. The project is part of a broader modelling framework at HPE, offering collaboration opportunities with other PhD candidates.

Experimental work includes designing and building prototypes to validate new cooling and winding concepts under realistic operating conditions. The laboratory provides a scientifically exciting, full-time position within a dynamic international team, encouraging participation in international conferences and offering a competitive salary, excellent benefits, and access to state-of-the-art research facilities.

Applicants must have a diploma or M.Sc. degree in electrical engineering with excellent grades, fundamental knowledge of power electronic converter systems, good communication skills, and fluency in English. Commitment to teamwork and interest in detailed modelling and design of magnetic components are essential. ETH Zürich values diversity, sustainability, and an inclusive culture, actively promoting equality of opportunity and working towards a climate-neutral future.

To apply, submit your application online via the ETH Zurich portal, including a comprehensive CV, B.S. and M.Sc. transcripts, electronic copies of thesis/publications (if available), and names/addresses of references (to be sent by email to [email protected]). Applications via email or postal services will not be considered. For further information, contact Prof. Dr. Jürgen Biela at [email protected] or visit the HPE website.

ETH Zürich is located in Zurich, Switzerland, and is one of the world’s leading universities in science and technology, fostering independent thinking and excellence. Join us to contribute to innovative solutions for global challenges.
