PhD opportunity at the University of Cambridge in the Department of Clinical Neurosciences on Mitochondrial Genetic Determinants of Multiple Sclerosis . This project investigates how mitochondrial genetic variants influence the outcome of multiple sclerosis (MS) . The research builds on prior genome-wide association studies (GWAS) that have identified more than 200 autosomal variants associated with MS, while extending the analysis to the mitochondrial genome. Using a dedicated mitochondrial var...

This PhD project at Maastricht University and Maastricht UMC+ explores how the smallest blood vessels in the brain contribute to dementia and the clearance of harmful waste products from brain tissue. The work is part of the MODEM consortium, which studies the biological mechanisms underlying the onset and progression of dementia. You will investigate the neurovascular unit, with a particular focus on how capillaries interact with surrounding brain tissue and how microvascular function may relat...

About this position

This PhD project at Radboud University Medical Center focuses on multiple system atrophy (MSA), a rare and serious brain disorder that often resembles Parkinson’s disease but progresses more rapidly. The position combines two connected research tracks aimed at improving care for people with MSA and the professionals who diagnose and study it.

In the first track, the project develops an AI-supported pathway for MSA knowledge sharing and education. Because most neurologists see MSA only rarely, new insights do not always reach them quickly. The study aims to build a largely automated process that continuously translates the growing scientific literature on MSA into reliable, practical information for neurologists and movement-disorder researchers.

The second track, MAESTRO, addresses the challenge of early and accurate diagnosis. At the start of disease, MSA can be difficult to distinguish from Parkinson’s disease, yet the distinction matters because treatment response and side effects differ. The project investigates whether a combination of measurable biomarkers can better predict the eventual clinical diagnosis. These biomarkers may include signals from blood or cerebrospinal fluid, MRI abnormalities, and eye-movement measures.

The work is embedded in the Expertise Center for Parkinson’s and Movement Disorders within the Neurology department of Radboudumc. You will join an enthusiastic multidisciplinary research team and work closely with clinical colleagues, the neurochemistry research team, other PhD candidates, senior researchers, healthcare professionals, and patient representatives. The project offers a chance to contribute to clinically meaningful research at the interface of diagnostics, biomarker discovery, and responsible AI-enabled knowledge translation.

The role also mentions the option to spend around one day per week as a trial physician across multiple studies in the team, supporting patient safety assessments and study-specific medical procedures while maintaining clinical skills.
