About this position
This postdoctoral position at the University of Groningen is focused on living evidence synthesis, systematic reviews, and AI-supported evidence research. The project is embedded in an ambitious international programme that aims to improve the understanding and clinical use of biomarkers and endpoints related to reward, motivation, and impulsivity across major depressive disorder, Alzheimer’s disease, and obesity.
The successful candidate will help develop and maintain a structured living evidence framework that continuously captures, evaluates, and integrates new findings from a broad and fast-moving research landscape. The role combines advanced evidence synthesis methods with newer approaches to research automation and large language model support, with attention to transparent, reproducible, and human-validated workflows.
The work spans multiple evidence streams and modalities, including neuroimaging, electrophysiology, biosamples, behavioural and cognitive measures, and digital phenotyping. The postdoctoral researcher will also contribute to machine-readable evidence maps, metadata structures, versioned updates, and the interpretation of evidence across diagnostic groups and research domains.
This position sits within an interdisciplinary environment at the University of Groningen’s Faculty of Science and Engineering, in collaboration with researchers from academia, clinical research, patient organisations, industry, regulatory science, and health technology assessment. The role offers substantial scientific responsibility and the chance to contribute to an international programme at the interface of evidence-based medicine, biomarker research, clinical research, and artificial intelligence.

What's required
A PhD in biomedical sciences, psychology, neuroscience, medicine, or a related discipline is required. Applicants should have demonstrable experience with systematic reviews and evidence syntheses, preferably living systematic reviews or evidence surveillance, and solid expertise in quantitative evidence synthesis and meta-analysis. A strong understanding of methodological quality, risk of bias, heterogeneity, and critical appraisal is expected, along with experience in statistical analysis and reproducible workflows using R, Python, or comparable tools. Interest in or experience with AI, NLP, or large language models in research workflows is required, as well as the ability to critically assess their opportunities and limitations. Experience with complex or heterogeneous evidence, excellent scientific writing, strong organisation and project coordination skills, excellent communication skills, and a very good command of written and spoken English are also required. Experience with living evidence platforms, evidence mapping, systematic review automation, machine-readable metadata, version-controlled workflows, LLM-supported screening or data extraction, biomarker validation, or research in major depressive disorder, Alzheimer’s disease, or obesity would be particularly valuable.
