About this position
The University of Queensland, in partnership with the Indian Institute of Technology Delhi, is offering a PhD position through the UQ–IITD Academy of Research program. The project focuses on the development of flexible batteries for next-generation healthcare monitoring devices, a rapidly growing area in materials and energy research. Flexible batteries are essential for wearable medical devices and wireless monitoring systems, enabling continuous, reliable, and lightweight power sources for healthcare applications.
The research aims to address the challenge of maintaining both mechanical and electrochemical integrity in batteries subjected to dynamic deformation such as bending, stretching, and twisting. The project will develop flexible, printed batteries using advanced screen-printing techniques, providing a cost-effective and sustainable alternative to conventional lithium-ion technologies. Key objectives include designing and synthesizing flexible polymer electrolytes with high ionic conductivity and mechanical stability, developing fatigue-resistant electrodes, and employing advanced characterization techniques to study electrolyte–electrode interfaces and failure mechanisms.
Applicants should have a strong background in materials engineering, with desirable experience in polymer engineering. The project is suitable for candidates with degrees in engineering or science, and an understanding of battery technology, electrochemistry, and mechanical properties of materials is advantageous. The position is open to both Australian and international students (excluding Indian nationals for UQ, and excluding Australian nationals for IITD), and offers the opportunity to work across two leading institutions.
Supervision will be provided by Associate Professor Ruth Knibbe (University of Queensland), Professor Suddhasatwa Basu (IIT Delhi), Professor Amit Gupta (IIT Delhi), and Dr Aditya Khanna (University of Queensland). The research will utilize state-of-the-art facilities and advanced characterization tools, including tomographic imaging and impedance spectroscopy, to investigate battery performance and failure mechanisms.
Interested candidates should submit an Expression of Interest via the UQ–IITD Academy of Research portal by 7th January 2025. For more information, visit the project page or contact the supervisors directly.
