About this position

The Chair in Nonlinear Dynamics at ETH Zurich is seeking a PhD candidate to work on modeling and control of nonlinear dynamical systems from data. The project focuses on developing efficient, theoretically sound, fast, and directly interpretable alternatives to black-box neural-network approaches for complex physical problems.

The successful candidate will contribute to the further development of spectral submanifold (SSM) methods and broader concepts in nonlinear model reduction. Potential research directions include nonlinear modeling and control for fluid-structure interactions, materials with memory, soft robotics, tele-operated systems, lightweight space structures, and turbulent flows.

The position may be based in either the Department of Mechanical and Process Engineering or the Department of Mathematics, depending on the candidate’s background and preferences. An early start is preferred, though the starting date is flexible.

Applicants should hold a master’s degree in mechanical engineering, applied mathematics, physics, or a related field. Strong mathematical ability is essential, and prior research experience in fluid mechanics, structural vibrations, model reduction, or control is expected. Experience with nonlinear dynamical systems and data-driven analysis is considered an advantage.

The role is hosted by ETH Zurich, one of the world’s leading science and technology universities, known for excellence in fundamental research and strong links to societal impact. The project sits at the interface of applied mathematics, mechanics, and data-driven modeling, making it attractive for candidates interested in interpretable methods for complex dynamical systems.

Interested candidates must apply online via the ETH Zurich application portal. The application package should include a CV, Bachelor’s and Master’s transcripts, and contact information for at least two references. Questions about the position should be directed to Prof. George Haller at [email protected]. Applications by email or postal mail will not be considered.
