About this position
PhD Position in Quantum Transport with van der Waals Heterostructures is available at the Institut Català de Nanociència i Nanotecnologia (ICN2), located at the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona campus in Bellaterra, Barcelona, Spain.
The doctoral researcher will join the Physics and Engineering of Nanodevices Research Group, led by ICREA Professor Sergio O. Valenzuela, and supervised by Sergio O. Valenzuela and Dr. Juan F. Sierra. The project investigates charge and spin transport in two-dimensional quantum materials and van der Waals heterostructures, including spin-orbit and magnetic proximity effects, spin-charge interconversion, spin torques, and the relationship between spin, magnetism, and topology.
Research activities include designing and fabricating quantum devices, preparing and assembling two-dimensional materials, electron-beam lithography and cleanroom nanofabrication, cryogenic and high-magnetic-field transport measurements, spin-resolved magnetotransport, spectroscopic characterization, electrostatic control, data analysis, conference presentations, and scientific publication.
Applicants should hold a Master’s degree in Physics, Materials Science, Nanoscience, or a related discipline and have a strong foundation in solid-state physics. Relevant experience is advantageous but not mandatory. The position requires scientific motivation, attention to detail, independence, teamwork, and good written and spoken English.
This is a full-time, four-year temporary contract at 37.5 hours per week. Funding comes from the Spanish State Research Agency National Plan grant PID2025-173015OB-I00. Salary depends on qualifications and experience; relocation support and life insurance are included. Applications are continuously reviewed, with the listed closing date of 29 December 2026.
