About this position
This PhD project at Leiden University Medical Center focuses on brain clearance: how the brain removes waste products and how disturbances in this process may contribute to dementia. The student will investigate cerebrospinal fluid dynamics and related mechanisms using innovative MRI techniques together with a wearable measurement device called the glymphometer, which is based on near-infrared spectroscopy and can be worn overnight.
The research combines technical development with clinical investigation in older adults with memory problems and patients with hypertension. The PhD candidate will be involved in study design, participant inclusion and supervision, data collection, MRI scanning, wearable measurements, analysis, interpretation, and presentation of findings at national and international conferences.
The project is carried out as an equal collaboration between LUMC and Radboudumc, bringing together expertise in MRI development, wearable sensing, geriatrics, radiology, and neurology. The student will work at both locations, be employed by LUMC, and pursue the doctorate at Radboud University. The position is also part of the national MODEM consortium, which aims to improve understanding of dementia through fundamental research.
The environment is multidisciplinary and research-intensive, with MRI researchers, geriatricians, and radiologists working closely across institutions. An ICH-GCP training is available within LUMC.
