About this position

The University of Southern Denmark (SDU) Robotics group, part of the Maersk Mc-Kinney Moller Institute, is offering one or more fully funded 3-year PhD positions focused on the manipulation of flexible objects using industrial robots and demonstration-initialized reinforcement learning. The successful candidate will join SDU's main campus in Odense, Denmark, and work primarily onsite in a vibrant research environment at the heart of the Odense Robotics Cluster, collaborating with leading companies such as Universal Robots, Mobile Industrial Robots (MIR), and over 120 other industry partners.

This PhD project is part of the MADE REACT initiative, which addresses the challenges of designing resilient robot solutions for high-mix, low-volume manufacturing. The research aims to enable rapid setup of robot manipulators for advanced manufacturing tasks by leveraging digital models and reinforcement learning techniques, initialized with human demonstration data. The candidate will develop detailed simulation models for robots, sensors, and assembly components, and create robust manipulation strategies to be implemented in real robot systems. The work will integrate both visual and tactile sensing for flexible object manipulation.

SDU Robotics is a team of approximately 60 researchers specializing in modeling, estimation, and control of advanced robotic technologies. The group is involved in numerous national and European projects and maintains a strong network of academic and industrial collaborators. The research environment is highly collaborative, supportive, and encourages innovation, creativity, and professional growth. SDU values teamwork, diligence, enthusiasm for robotics, and a drive for continuous learning and responsibility.

Applicants must hold a master’s degree (or equivalent to a Danish master’s degree) in robotics or a closely related field. Required expertise includes robot control, reinforcement learning, simulation of robot dynamics, and deployment of learning-based solutions. Preferred skills include signal processing, experimental design, and data analysis. Candidates should demonstrate excellent English proficiency, high self-motivation, the ability to work independently and in interdisciplinary teams, and a strong sense of responsibility.

The position offers a competitive monthly gross salary including pension (36,608 DKK), with the possibility of a higher salary step for candidates with relevant postgraduate experience. Employment is contingent on enrollment approved by the PhD School and will follow faculty and national regulations. SDU encourages applications from all backgrounds and conducts research in critical technologies, which may require background checks.

Odense, Denmark’s third-largest city, offers a unique blend of historic charm and modern urban amenities, with easy access to major cities and a vibrant cultural scene. SDU maintains strong ties with local and international corporations, providing an excellent environment for research and professional development.

To apply, candidates should prepare a motivation letter, CV, degree certificates, transcripts, completed TEK PhD application forms, and other required documents in English and PDF format. Applications must be submitted via the SDU recruitment portal before February 8, 2026. For further information, contact Professor Henrik Gordon Petersen ([email protected]) or Professor Christoffer Sloth ([email protected]). Technical support is available at [email protected].
