About this position
PhD Position: Scalable AI and Advanced Computing for Earth Observation at Forschungszentrum Jülich / Jülich Supercomputing Centre (JSC), Germany.
This doctoral opening sits in the Simulation and Data Lab for AI and Machine Learning for Remote Sensing. The project combines artificial intelligence, earth observation, remote sensing, geospatial data, and high-performance computing to develop scalable methods for large, heterogeneous EO tasks. Research topics include geospatial foundation models, representation learning, reproducible data and experimental workflows, MLOps pipelines, distributed/GPU-accelerated training and inference, and benchmarking for predictive performance, generalisation, efficiency, and scalability. Depending on the research direction, hybrid quantum-classical approaches may also be explored.
The position is embedded in a strong research environment at one of Europe’s major supercomputing centres, with collaboration across academia, industry, and public agencies. The doctoral programme is in Electrical and Computer Engineering at the University of Iceland, and a short research stay in Reykjavík is planned each year.
Eligibility highlights: excellent master’s degree or equivalent in computer science, data science, applied mathematics, physics, scientific computing, remote sensing, geoinformatics, or a related field; solid machine learning and mathematical background; strong Python/programming skills; experience with PyTorch/TensorFlow and reproducible scientific software development; very good English at B2 CEFR or higher. Helpful extras include EO/geospatial analysis, parallel or distributed computing, GPU programming, Linux/container environments, quantum computing, or agentic AI.
Funding: fixed-term for 3 years with possible limited extension; salary according to TVöD-Bund pay group 13 at 75%, plus year-end bonus and capital-forming benefits.
Location: Jülich, Germany.
Application: apply online via the job posting/career portal. The position is open until filled.
