About this position
At the Leibniz Institute of Atmospheric Physics (IAP) in Kühlungsborn, Germany, a full-time postdoctoral position is available in the Department of Modelling of Atmospheric Processes. The project, “Drivers of D-region ionosphere variability above the Baltic Sea region”, is part of the collaborative initiative Atmospheric Impact on the R-Mode Positioning System, involving IAP, the University of Greifswald, the DLR Institute for Solar-Terrestrial Physics, the DLR Institute of Communications and Navigation, and the Leibniz Institute for Baltic Sea Research Warnemünde.
The work focuses on how atmospheric and solar forcing influence the D-region ionosphere above the Baltic Sea and, in turn, the reliability of R-Mode navigation signals under GNSS disruption. The successful candidate will run UA-ICON simulations with interactive chemistry and/or UA-ICON-CTM simulations, using the institute’s upper-atmosphere general circulation and chemistry transport models. Research questions include the role of global teleconnections, such as tropical influences and polar vortex dynamics, on D-region chemistry, as well as the effects of solar variability. The project aims to compare lower-atmospheric forcing with solar forcing and assess predictability of D-region conditions.
This is a two-year fixed-term appointment starting on 1 April 2027. The salary is according to EG 13 TV-L, and the position is based on a 40-hour work week. The institute offers a modern working environment near the Baltic Sea, participation in the company pension scheme (VBL), flexible working hours, mobile working within applicable regulations, and an international research setting.
Applicants should hold a PhD in Physics, Computational Science, Atmospheric Science, or a related discipline. Required skills include high-performance computing, modern statistical methods, and the ability to visualize large data sets. Excellent English communication skills and strong teamwork abilities are also expected.
Applications must include a motivational letter, CV, diploma with final grade, copies of certificates, possible testimonies, and references. Please send the application by email to [email protected] and indicate the keyword 2026-09. Full consideration is given to applications received before 14 December 2026.
