About this position

This PhD position at Lund University focuses on the sociology of authoritarian law, specifically investigating how individuals and communities in Central Asia mobilize for justice and rights outside formal legal institutions. The project examines informal negotiations, covert resistance, and grassroots justice initiatives that arise within authoritarian legal landscapes, aiming to understand how citizens challenge and reshape authoritarian rule through everyday social interactions. The doctoral project is part of the SOCIAL Doctoral Network, funded by the Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions under Horizon Europe, and offers a vibrant research environment with international collaboration, training events, and intersectoral placements. As a doctoral student, you will conduct independent research, undertake fieldwork in Central Asia, participate in mandatory secondments abroad, and contribute to departmental activities including teaching and seminars.

The position is full-time for four years, with a competitive MSCA salary and additional mobility and family allowances. The doctoral programme in sociology of law consists of 240 credits and culminates in a public thesis defense. Applicants must have a relevant advanced degree, strong English proficiency, and meet specific eligibility criteria, including mobility requirements.

Experience with qualitative research, knowledge of legal sociology, governance, and Central Asian contexts are considered assets. The application process requires submission of a cover letter, CV, degree certificates, transcripts, research proposal, thesis or writing sample, and referee contact details. The successful candidate will join a dynamic research group led by Dr.

Rustamjon Urinboyev and benefit from comprehensive training in research methods, ethics, and transferable skills. Employment is governed by Swedish higher education regulations, and the working language is primarily English, with an expectation to acquire basic Swedish during the period. The position starts in September 2026 and requires on-site work in Lund, Sweden.
