About this position
This PhD position at KTH Royal Institute of Technology is part of the Marie Skłodowska-Curie Doctoral Network ENDURE, focusing on the physical modelling of deformation and damage in cellulose fibre networks during the forming process. The project aims to develop advanced numerical models for fibre network mechanics in cellulose-based products, integrating studies of fibre properties, process conditions, and geometry to create new tools for material design. The doctoral candidate will be based at KTH in Stockholm and collaborate closely with the industrial partner Yangi AB, gaining unique interdisciplinary skills relevant to both academia and industry.
The research environment is highly international and dynamic, involving collaboration with five universities, two research institutes, and eight industrial partners across four countries. The project is funded by the EU's Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions (MSCA), providing a competitive monthly salary (starting at 33,000 SEK/month) and additional mobility and family allowances. The position offers opportunities to contribute to industrially relevant research questions and to develop advanced computational and experimental skills.
Supervision will be provided by Professor Sören Östlund, with the final decision made upon admission. The successful candidate will benefit from KTH's excellent working conditions, professional development opportunities, and a supportive, diverse academic community. The doctoral appointment is full-time and limited to four years, with the possibility of renewal according to Swedish regulations. The position may also include up to 20% teaching or administrative duties.
Eligibility and Requirements: Applicants must not have resided or carried out their main activity in Sweden for more than 12 months in the three years prior to recruitment. A completed advanced degree (Master's or equivalent) or at least 240 ECTS credits (with at least 60 at advanced level) is required. Proficiency in English equivalent to English B/6 is mandatory. Merits include experience with numerical methods (FEM), programming (Python, Matlab, C++, Fortran), and a background in material mechanics or computational modelling. Strong personal qualities such as independence, collaboration, professionalism, and analytical ability are highly valued.
Application Process: Applications must be submitted via the KTH recruitment system by 2025-11-30. Required documents include a CV, cover letter, degree certificates and transcripts, proof of English proficiency, and relevant publications. All documents should be in English or Swedish, with certified translations if necessary. For further information, contact Professor Sören Östlund ([email protected]) or Artem Kulachenko ([email protected]).
KTH is committed to equality, diversity, and a sustainable future, offering a creative and supportive environment for doctoral studies. Join KTH and contribute to cutting-edge research in solid mechanics and materials science with real-world industrial impact.
