About this position

The University of Vienna’s Faculty of Chemistry, through the Vienna Doctoral School in Chemistry (DoSChem), is offering a fully funded PhD position in the field of Analytical Chemistry, focusing on structural mass spectrometry for plant glycolipidomics. The successful candidate will join the Rampler Lab, led by Assistant Professor Evelyn Rampler, and work at the interface of analytical chemistry, lipidomics, and plant biochemistry. The research project centers on the development and application of advanced mass spectrometry (MS)-based methodologies for the comprehensive structural elucidation of plant glycolipids, with a particular emphasis on highly glycosylated species that present significant analytical challenges.

The project involves developing novel extraction and sample preparation strategies tailored to plant glycolipids, implementing advanced chromatographic separation techniques (such as RP, HILIC, and online 2D-LC), and applying state-of-the-art MS fragmentation methods including electron-activated dissociation (EAD) and multi-stage fragmentation (MSⁿ). Due to the complexity of the datasets and the limited availability of analytical standards, the project also requires multidimensional annotation strategies and computational data analysis skills (e.g., R, Python, MATLAB, or MS software). The overarching goal is to establish a global glycolipid profiling assay for different plant matrices, enabling automated, high-confidence structural elucidation.

The Rampler Lab is dedicated to developing and applying high-resolution mass spectrometry and LC-MS workflows in omics research, including proteomics, metabolomics, lipidomics, and multiomics. The group is passionate about challenging molecules such as glycolipids and collaborates with national and international partners to address complex biological questions, such as plant heat resilience and climate change.

The position is embedded in a vibrant, international research environment with access to high-end MS instrumentation and advanced separation technologies. The University of Vienna is committed to diversity, equity, and inclusion, and encourages applications from candidates of all backgrounds. The program language is English, and the school fosters a collaborative and open-minded atmosphere where students engage in interdisciplinary and curiosity-driven research.

Eligibility: Applicants must hold a Master’s degree (or equivalent) in analytical chemistry, chemistry, or a related field. Strong interest in experimental and instrumental analytical chemistry, wet-lab experience, and motivation for hands-on method development are required. Prior experience with LC–MS is highly desirable, and programming/data analysis skills are essential. Candidates should be able to work independently and collaboratively, and possess strong English communication skills. German is appreciated but not required.

Funding: The position is fully funded for 3 years (30 hours/week) with a fair and transparent salary according to the University of Vienna collective agreement. The program offers excellent training, coaching, and professional development opportunities, as well as access to public transport and a supportive work–life balance.

Application: Applications must be submitted exclusively via the official DoSChem application portal. Direct email applications will not be considered. The deadline for applications is 27 March 2026, 12:00 noon. For more information about the research group, visit ramplerlab.univie.ac.at.
