This funded PhD position at the University of Liège focuses on the investigation of neuroinflammation in the context of Alzheimer's disease, utilizing advanced PET imaging and 7 Tesla MRI technologies. Neuroinflammation is increasingly recognized as a critical factor in the development and progression of neurodegenerative diseases, particularly Alzheimer's disease (AD), where it may precede and promote amyloid and tau pathologies. Despite its importance, the role of neuroinflammation and its association with AD biomarkers in humans, especially during presymptomatic or prodromal stages, remains underexplored.
The primary goal of this project is to provide a detailed understanding of the relationships between PET scan markers of neuroinflammation, quantitative MRI metrics, and cognitive functioning in healthy individuals at varying risk levels for AD, as well as in patients in the prodromal phase (mild cognitive impairment). The project includes a longitudinal component with up to 10 years of follow-up, part of which may be incorporated into the PhD research.
The successful candidate will join the GIGA-CRC Human Imaging department, a highly collaborative group comprising 10 research teams with expertise spanning biology, psychology, neurology, chemistry, physics, and engineering. The group is equipped with state-of-the-art facilities, including 3T and 7T MRI (Siemens), PET scan (Siemens), high-density EEG, EEG-TMS, EEG-fMRI, a sleep unit, and a radiochemistry lab with cyclotron (IBA), all housed within the same building. The project benefits from collaborations with renowned imaging centers in Germany and the UK, such as the Max Planck Institute for Human Cognitive and Brain Sciences (Leipzig), the German Center for Neurodegenerative Diseases (DZNE, Bonn), and the Department of Imaging Neuroscience/Functional Imaging Laboratory at University College London.
Applicants should be highly motivated, possess excellent communication and organizational skills, and be able to work both independently and as part of a team. Candidates must hold an MSc in a relevant discipline (engineering, MR physics, biomedical sciences, cognitive neuroscience, psychology, biology, etc.). Experience in cognitive neuroscience, neurological disease, and PET/MRI imaging is highly valued. Strong statistical and programming skills (Matlab, R, Python) are required. Mastery of English is essential, and while French is a bonus, non-French speakers will be expected to learn the language.
