About this position

This fully funded PhD position at Eindhoven University of Technology focuses on computational fluid dynamics (CFD) modelling of metal electrodeposition, specifically ironmaking via low-temperature electrolysis. The project is part of the EcoIron initiative led by Prof. Yali Tang, supported by a European Research Council (ERC) starting grant.

The research aims to address fundamental knowledge gaps in the conversion mechanisms from iron oxides to metallic iron, which are crucial for green steel production and iron-based energy storage. The successful candidate will develop advanced multiphase CFD models that resolve phase changes at interfaces and may integrate electrochemistry and electromagnetics.

Model development will utilize interface tracking and capturing methods such as immersed boundary, level-set, volume-of-fluid, and phase field techniques. The position is embedded in the Department of Mechanical Engineering, which is renowned for its world-class research and strong industry collaborations, particularly in the Brainport region. Employment is full-time for four years, with a competitive salary (scale P: €3,059–€3,881/month), year-end bonus, vacation pay, pension scheme, and additional benefits including allowances for commuting, home working, and internet costs. Applicants must hold a master’s degree (or equivalent) in Chemical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Computational Science, Applied Physics, or a related discipline. A solid background in classic multiphase flow CFD techniques (such as DNS, VOF, LS, IBM) is required. Strong programming skills in at least one scientific computing language are essential (experience with Basilisk is beneficial). Previous experience in numerical modelling of electrolysis is advantageous but not mandatory. Candidates should have a research-oriented attitude, ability to work in interdisciplinary teams, motivation to develop teaching skills and coach students, and fluency in spoken and written English at C1 level.
