About this position

This PhD position at ETH Zürich focuses on in-situ characterization and digital modeling of Li-Ion batteries within the Materials and Device Engineering (MaDE) group led by Prof. Vanessa Wood. The group is highly interdisciplinary, working on topics ranging from material development and structural analysis using x-ray techniques to advanced digital modeling and simulation. The research will involve developing beamline-specific measurement cells for in-situ tomography, fabricating and characterizing battery samples, analyzing beamline data, and creating structure-based multiphysics models to study electro-chemo-mechanical phenomena in Li-Ion batteries. The project offers access to extensive datasets, code, and expertise in tomographic measurements, image processing, and multiphysics simulation. Collaboration opportunities include working with a battery modeling software company and engaging with a diverse, motivated team. The group also explores optoelectronics based on nanoparticles, providing a unique chance to investigate their use in batteries. ETH Zürich provides a well-equipped laboratory, access to microscopy facilities, and opportunities to present research at international conferences. The university values diversity, inclusion, and sustainability, fostering an environment where all staff and students can thrive. Applicants should have a strong background in engineering, physics, material science, or computer science, and possess excellent English skills. The application requires a cover letter, CV, transcripts, and references, and must be submitted online. The deadline for applications is November 7th, 2025. For further information, candidates can contact Prof. Vanessa Wood or Markus Wied.
