About this position
The Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU) is recruiting two PhD candidates in the BATT-MECH project, a collaboration between the Department of Structural Engineering and the Department of Energy and Process Engineering. The project is connected to SIMLab (Structural Impact Laboratory) and the Battery Mechanics and Sensing Lab, and is carried out in collaboration with Audi AG.
The research addresses the safety, reliability and lifetime of lithium-ion batteries for electric vehicles and energy-storage systems. It combines laboratory experiments, advanced measurement and imaging, electrochemical and mechanical analysis, and numerical modelling to understand coupled battery behaviour during normal operation and mechanical abuse.
One PhD project focuses on internal short circuits caused by impact and crushing. The candidate will perform mechanical abuse experiments, characterize internal failure mechanisms, and develop and validate high-fidelity finite element models under crash-relevant loading conditions. This work will support predictive tools for safer battery cells, modules and packs.
The second project investigates electrolyte motion induced salt inhomogeneity (EMSI). The candidate will use fiber-optic and other battery-sensing approaches, cycle instrumented cells, study degradation through combined mechanical and electrochemical analysis, and develop efficient diagnostic protocols related to battery reliability, state of health and state of safety.
Both candidates will conduct and publish research, participate in an interdisciplinary academic-industry project, and work with experimental mechanics, computational modelling and electrochemical energy storage researchers. The positions are based in Trondheim within NTNU's international research environment.

What's required
Applicants must hold a professionally or academically relevant background. Position 1 requires a background in solid mechanics, structural engineering, mechanical engineering or a similar field. Position 2 preferably requires research experience in electrochemical energy storage devices; candidates with strong preparation in nanotechnology, electronic engineering or solid-state physics are also encouraged. Position 2 additionally requires documented research dissemination concerning electrolyte motion induced salt inhomogeneity in lithium-ion batteries, programming experience in Python and Fortran, and experience with experimental work and data analysis for electrochemical energy storage devices. For both positions, applicants need education equivalent to a five-year Norwegian degree with 120 master's-level credits, a strong academic record normally at B level or better, English fluency, and eligibility for admission to NTNU's PhD programme in Engineering. Preferred qualifications include knowledge of plasticity theory, constitutive modelling, nonlinear finite element methods, lithium-ion batteries, LS-DYNA, industrial or real-time battery sensing, optical or photonic measurements, and interdisciplinary experimental or numerical research. Applicants should be motivated, independent, systematic, collaborative and able to communicate research results effectively.
How to apply
Submit the application electronically through Jobbnorge.no by 23 November 2026. Include transcripts and diplomas, CV and certificates, a one-page motivation letter, relevant publications or research work, and contact details for three referees. Applicants with foreign education should also provide documentation of the scope and quality of their education and any diploma supplement or HK-dir statement.
