About this position
The SoftMatter group at the University of Münster is offering a funded PhD position focused on the characterization and understanding of stimuli-responsive emulsions using atomic force microscopy. This research builds on recent advances in interface interactions and aims to prepare and characterize polymeric particles and emulsions stabilized by them. The project will involve the establishment and further development of advanced measurement techniques, particularly atomic force microscopy, and the development and optimization of experimental protocols to investigate the stabilization and destabilization mechanisms of switchable emulsions.
Key tasks include the analysis of complex experimental datasets, including software-assisted evaluation, to elucidate the interactions governing stimuli-responsive emulsions. The successful candidate will document and present results at scientific conferences and publish findings in scientific journals. The position is tied to working towards a doctorate and is available as soon as possible.
Applicants should have a Master’s or Diploma degree in Physics, Chemistry, Materials Science, or a related field. Proficiency in English, both spoken and written, is required. Experience with atomic force microscopy, polymer and nano-technology, or emulsions/colloidal matter is desirable but can also be acquired during the PhD. The ideal candidate is committed, motivated, team-oriented, and able to work independently.
The position offers a 3-year contract (salary level E13TV-L 67%) with the possibility of extension. The research will be conducted at the Institute of Physical Chemistry, University of Münster, located in Münster, Germany. Applications should include a cover letter, CV, and certificates, submitted electronically as a PDF file to Prof. Dr. Marcel Rey ([email protected]) by 10 July 2026. For further information, candidates can visit the group’s academic page or contact Prof. Dr. Rey directly.
This opportunity is ideal for candidates interested in physical chemistry, materials science, polymer science, and advanced microscopy techniques, offering a collaborative and innovative research environment with strong academic mentorship.
