About this position

Join the AI:GENOMIX Lab at Aalborg University as a PhD researcher and contribute to pioneering research at the intersection of artificial intelligence and genomics. AI:GENOMIX is part of the AI:X Labs initiative, a major cross-faculty effort to advance AI research and its real-world applications. The lab brings together experts from the Department of Health Science and Technology and the Department of Mathematical Sciences to develop next-generation AI models that reveal the genetic architecture of common human diseases.

Two fully funded PhD stipends are available, each with a distinct scientific focus but designed for close collaboration. Stipend 1 (AI Core) centers on developing deep learning architectures to capture non-additive genetic effects in large-scale genomic data. Stipend 2 (AI Integrated) focuses on applying and interpreting genetic interaction models in biological and clinical contexts. Both positions involve working with simulated and biobank-scale data, functional genomics, and advanced modelling approaches to improve polygenic prediction and support precision medicine.

As a PhD student, you will prepare and curate data, develop or apply advanced AI models, conduct benchmarking studies, and analyze both methodological and biological implications. You will collaborate with supervisors, fellow PhD students, and participate in interdisciplinary lab activities, scientific publications, and conferences. Doctoral training includes relevant PhD courses, limited teaching or supervision, and an external research stay (3-6 months) at a foreign institution.

Applicants should hold a master's degree and demonstrate strong motivation for interdisciplinary research. For Stipend 1, a background in machine learning, applied mathematics, statistics, or computational modelling is required, with experience in deep learning and large datasets preferred. For Stipend 2, experience in genetic data analysis, statistical genetics, and an interest in connecting AI models to biological and clinical relevance are essential. Strong English skills, teamwork, and the ability to manage complex tasks are important for both roles.

The positions are based in departments with strong traditions of collaboration, supportive environments, and access to modern facilities. Aalborg offers a high quality of life, affordable living, and a vibrant cultural scene. The PhD stipends are fully funded for three years, with salary and terms in accordance with Danish collective agreements.

To apply, submit your application, CV, diplomas, and supporting documents via Aalborg University's recruitment system. The selection process includes online and possibly in-person interviews. For more information, visit the department websites or contact the listed supervisors.
