About this position
Microgrid Resilience PhD at the University of Nottingham will develop a modelling approach for assessing the resilience of small-scale, converter-dominated microgrids.
The project addresses reliable electricity supply in systems that integrate renewable and distributed energy resources. The research will examine how microgrids can operate autonomously when the upstream grid fails, improve electricity-system resilience, reduce energy not supplied and potentially provide financial benefits through excess generation supplied to the main grid.
The doctoral researcher will model a microgrid combining photovoltaic generation, hybrid electrical storage and hydrogen technologies. Batteries and supercapacitors will be integrated with a hydrogen electrolyser and fuel cell, enabling hydrogen production, storage and reconversion to be actively controlled as part of microgrid operation.
A central component of the research is the development of microgrid resilience metrics and methods for their modelling and analysis. The project will investigate disturbances across different frequency and impact levels, examining their effects on the microgrid’s ability to resist incidents, recover quickly and restore operation under uncertainty.
The project is supervised by Rasa Remenyte-Prescott and Marco Rivera in the University of Nottingham’s Faculty of Engineering, providing a research environment spanning electrical power systems, renewable energy integration, energy storage, hydrogen systems and resilience modelling.
