About this position
Nord University in Bodø, Norway, invites applications for 1–2 full-time PhD Research Fellow positions in Social Science focused on housing segregation and gentrification in Scandinavian cities. The position is affiliated with the Urban Research in Small and Medium-Sized Urbanities (URBINN) group and the Social Policy and Welfare specialization within the PhD programme in Social Science.
The doctoral project will investigate how class- and ethnicity-based differences in housing search behaviour, residential mobility, neighbourhood perceptions, and neighbourhood choice may maintain or reinforce housing segregation and gentrification. Related topics include the formation of knowledge about neighbourhoods, links between housing choices and work, education, and leisure, and variation across cities and regions. A quantitative approach is expected, while mixed-methods projects combining statistical analysis with interviews or document studies are encouraged.
Applicants must hold a relevant bachelor’s and completed 120-ECTS master’s degree, demonstrate quantitative-methods knowledge, and have proficiency in R, Python, Stata, or similar tools, or the ability to acquire advanced data-analysis skills. Normally, a B average in the master’s degree and strong written and spoken English are required. Candidates must not already hold a PhD.
The appointment is normally three years, with a possible four-year option including 25% teaching or research duties. The annual salary is NOK 565,000, alongside pension, vacation, flexible working hours, research-network access, and other university benefits. The application deadline is 4 January 2027, and the expected start date is 1 September 2027 or by agreement.
Applications should include a 5–7-page project proposal, cover letter, CV, degree documents and transcripts, master’s thesis or link, references, and relevant language or qualification documentation. All documents must be uploaded as PDFs through the electronic application system.
