About this position

PhD Research Fellow position at the University of South-Eastern Norway (USN) in Porsgrunn, Norway, focused on hydropower generators, electricity supply security, and grid resilience.

The project is part of the FME SecurEL centre and is linked to Work Package 1 on Security of Electricity Supply. The successful candidate will study the role of hydropower generators in evolving regional distribution grids, including coordination between producers and system operators, grid stability, power balancing, islanded operation, fault ride-through, black start, and vulnerability/resilience indicators.

This is a four-year, full-time PhD appointment with 75% research and 25% teaching duties. Funding is provided by the Research Council of Norway and USN. Salary starts at NOK 550,800 under the Norwegian State salary scale for PhD research fellows, with pension and insurance benefits through the Norwegian Public Service Pension Fund.

Eligibility highlights include a master’s degree equivalent to a Norwegian master’s degree (120 ECTS), a strong STEM background, documented English proficiency, and B2-level Norwegian or Scandinavian language skills because some teaching duties are in Norwegian. A weighted average grade of B or better is usually required for PhD admission. Applicants should also submit a concise project proposal, master’s thesis, and evidence of programming/modelling experience; MATLAB, Python, Julia, JavaScript, control engineering, and optimization are especially relevant.

The position is based in Porsgrunn at the Department of Electrical Engineering, Information Technology, and Cybernetics within the research group Electrical Power Systems. The candidate must also meet security clearance and background check requirements and be enrolled in USN’s PhD program within three months of starting.

Apply via Jobbnorge by the deadline, including CV, cover letter, diplomas, project description, thesis, publications, references, and language documentation.
