The University of Bergen invites applications for a PhD Research Fellow in Organometallic Chemistry and Radiochemistry, based in the Department of Chemistry. This position focuses on the development of novel radiopharmaceuticals for positron emission tomography (PET) imaging, aiming to advance diagnostic capabilities through innovative radiometal complexes conjugated to bioactive molecules. The project is part of an interdisciplinary collaboration within the Department of Chemistry, with potential cooperation with Haukeland University Hospital, and offers a professionally stimulating environment for research and academic growth.

The research will center on designing and synthesizing functionalized multidentate chelators capable of efficiently trapping radiometals, supporting robust conjugation to bioactive small molecules, peptides, and proteins. The successful candidate will work at the interface of organometallic chemistry, organic synthesis, medicinal chemistry, and radiochemistry, contributing to the creation of next-generation radiotracers for PET imaging. Key tasks include refining trapping methodologies for transition-metal-based PET radiotracers, with emphasis on hydrolytic stability in biologically relevant media, and employing advanced analytical techniques such as NMR spectroscopy, HPLC, MS, FTIR, and X-ray crystallography.

The position is funded by the University of Bergen and offers a gross annual salary of NOK 568,700, with further increases based on length of service. Additional benefits include enrolment in the Norwegian Public Service Pension Fund and welfare benefits. The fellowship is for a fixed-term period of 3 years, with the possibility of a 4th year contingent on qualifications and departmental teaching needs. The successful candidate will participate in an approved educational programme for a PhD degree within 3 years and is expected to contribute to the supervision of MSc and BSc students, as well as participate in academic activities within the research group and department.

Applicants must hold a master's degree or equivalent in chemistry; master students may apply if they complete their final exam before 31.08.2026. Required experience includes synthesis and handling of organometallic compounds (including inert-atmosphere techniques) and organic synthesis involving multistep reaction sequences. Advantageous qualifications include knowledge of radiochemistry principles, practical expertise in chelator radiolabeling, advanced NMR methods, and other analytical techniques. Candidates must demonstrate independence, structured work habits, collaborative skills, and proficiency in written and oral English. Personal and relational qualities, research experience, ambitions, and potential will be considered in the evaluation process.
